Two sheriff deputies in Tennessee have been indicted on federal charges of conspiring to distribute anabolic steroids. Thomas Derek Bowman and Matthew Simpson, deputies working the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and Decatur County Sheriff’s Office respectively, have been accused of violation federal anabolic steroid laws by U.S. Attorney Lawrence J. Laurenzi of the Western District of Tennessee (”Henderson, Decatur Co. deputies indicted on drug charges,” May 21).
In two separate but related indictments, Bowman and Simpson are charged with conspiring with other persons to distribute anabolic steroids in and around Decatur and Henderson counties.
In addition to the conspiracy charge, Bowman is also charged with three counts of distribution of steroids, including Nandrolone Decanoate, Testosterone and Methandrostenolone.
In a search warrant executed at Bowman’s home in Lexington, about 500 dosage units of suspected steroids were seized.
Simpson is charged not only with conspiracy but also one count of illegal distribution of Testosterone.
Each count carries a penalty of up to five years in federal prison. If found guilty, Bowman could face up to 20 years in prison, and Simpson could face up to 10 years in prison, the release said.
Brandon Millay, Associate Professor of Electronics at Owensboro Community and Technical College, was indicted on federal steroid distribution charges on December 2, 2008. Millay’s involvement with the “steroid subculture” was well-known; he used his real name “bmillay” as his username on various steroid and bodybuilding forums and openly advertised the fact that he was a college professor with expertise in electronic and experience with military and law enforcement electronic devices (”Grand Jury Indicts Four Owensboro Men On Steroid Distribution Charges,” December 4).
The U.S. Attorney of Western Kentucky says Brandon Millay, 41; Kevin Revelette, 37; Keith Evans, 37; and Jimmie Garrison, 41, were all indicted on Wednesday on charges of conspiring to distribute anabolic steroids. The indictment alleges that the four men tried to distribute the steroids between October 2006 and April 2008.
Brandon Millay was the subject of a steroid bust on or about April 1, 2008. Rumors of Millay’s bust ensued shortly thereafter with speculation about the interrelationship between busts of steroid sources that were in close contact with Millay, such as CPT and Kong. Millay was the first to report the steroid bust involving Scott Haines of UGL Diamond Labs in Nashville, Tennessee. Millay’s proximity to several steroid bust made several members suspicious. Not surprisingly, it was alleged by several people on the forums that bmillay became a cooperating informant for federal and/or state investigators. Millay strongly denied these allegations (”anyone see Bmillay’s post on outlaw??,” April 27).

Brandon Millay posted prolificly on various forums sharing information about his own steroid use, recommendations on steroid cycling, and methods for thwarting law enforcement efforts targeted at steroid users.
Scott Haines, a personal trainer at the Nashville Athletic Club, was arrested this week last month for manfacturing and distributing anabolic steroids. Several hundred vials of anabolic steroids from an unidentified underground lab were confiscated by police. (Steroid pictures of vials from this underground lab thought to be Diamond Labs.)
The continuing investigation by Central Precinct undercover detectives into the illegal distribution of steroids in the Nashville area has resulted in the rearrest of suspect Scott Haines…
Haines’ probation was violated following his February 19 arrest on two counts of possessing steroids for resale. He was stopped after Central detectives saw him conducting sales from his vehicle. Recovered that day were 2,200 dosage units of anabolic steroid, $3,090 cash, and a 1994 Nissan Altima. Recovered on February 20 during a search of Haines’ Brooksboro Terrace apartment in South Nashville were 500 dosage units of anabolic steroid and 300 grams of powder used to manufacture steroids.
Scott Haines was apparently the steroid source for multiple police officers from different Tennesseean law enforcement agencies who worked out at the Nashville Athletic Club.
The Metro Nashville Police Department has officers under investigation for steroid use.
Three Metro police officers were decommissioned Feb. 29 after they were implicated in steroid use. Officers Mike Evans, Danny Cage and Stephen Reece are on “administrative assignment” with pay and required to be at home from the work hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., police spokesman Don Aaron said…
Sena Omer, 24, was set to graduate from the police academy March 6. He resigned the day before after questioning from detectives, police said.
Murfreesboro Police Department fired an officer for steroid use.
Murfreesboro Officer Phillip Hatcher was stripped of his gun and badge on Monday, but Channel 4 News learned on Thursday that he was fired from the department.
And the Tennessee Highway Patrol also has its own related steroid investigation.
Two Tennessee Highway Patrol officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal investigation.
The Department of Safety said Sgt. Larry Hitchcock and Trooper William Futrell, both 36, are under investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility.
Spokeswoman Laura McPherson would not give further details on the investigation, but the Highway Patrol has said it is looking into allegations of troopers using or selling steroids.
The steroid investigation is a joint operation between local law enforcement and the DEA.
