Arrest Warrants Issued for Several Oklahoma Bodybuilders

NPC bodbuilder Derrell Terrell

Oklahoma law enforcement have sent a clear message that they are targeting competitive bodybuilders who use anabolic steroids by issuing 10 arrest warrant, mostly for bodybuilders. The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Tulsa Police have been investigating the anabolic steroid and competitive bodybuilding scene for about two years. Law Enforcement purposely targeted middle- and upper-class competitive bodybuilders who used steroids solely for personal use (”Warrants Issued In Oklahoma Steroid Bust,” April 17).

Investigators say when they began the investigation two years ago; they vastly underestimated how bad the problem of anabolic steroid abuse was in Oklahoma. The bust doesn’t involve your average drug user.  The accused are middle and upper class professionals.  Some are accused of using steroids, others of selling or giving them away and agents say one man even ordered the raw ingredients from China to make his own.

National level NPC bodybuilders Trudy Ireland-Kline and Darrell Terrell and IFBB pro bodybuilder Sherry Smith (an Oklahoma City firefighter) are among the bodybuilders facing charges for personal use of steroids. Other bodybuilders who allegedly obtained steroids for personal use include Dr. Brad Stahlheber and Tom Burke were arrested.

Derrick Davis was busted for operating an underground lab that imported raw steroid powders from China and prepared oral and injectable anabolic steroids.

Oklahoma authorities were assisted by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and other federal law enforcement agencies. Oklahoma is the first state to specifically target competitive bodybuilders for violation of steroid possession laws.

At least three unidentified competitive bodybuilders obtained prescriptions for all of the steroids and ancillary medications that they used through face-to-face visits with Tulsa-area physician(s). Last year, IFBB Pro Guy Ducasse reportedly had prescriptions for personal quantities of pharmaceutical steroids and other medications when Tulsa Police searched his home. Ducasse was critical of news accounts portraying him as a “main distributor of anabolic steroids and other illegal performance drugs in Tulsa” and omitting the fact that he had prescriptions for all medications seized from his home.

Tulsa Police were not deterred by physician-prescribed anabolic steroids. When the bodybuilders ended up having prescriptions for the pharmaceutical steroids, police decided to pursue the doctor(s) who prescribed them. Dr. Gary Robert Lee, a family and sports medicine physician at Gilcrease Medical Center, prescribed stanozolol (Winstrol) and nandrolone (Deca Durabolin) for the “off-label” purpose of treating and assisting recovery from injuries to three bodybuilders. Tulsa County Assistant District Attorney Tony Evans filed felony anabolic steroid distribution charges against Dr. Lee this week (”Tulsa doctor charged over steroid prescriptions,” April 10).

The charge alleges that Lee wrote 28 prescriptions that were filled in Tulsa County pharmacies “for the purpose of building muscle bulk and muscle enhancement.”

The steroid witch-hunt targeting competitive bodybuilders is an ominous sign for NPC bodybuilding in Oklahoma and the state of competitive bodybuilding around the country should other states follow Oklahoma’s lead. Top officials in the IFBB and NPC publicly like to pretend that anabolic steroid use is uncommon in the sport of bodybuilding but the reality of the matter is hard to ignore.

Tulsa police issued a total of 10 arrest warrants and have promised more arrests. Only 6 individuals have been publicly named thus far. The fear that bodybuilders who use steroids solely for personal physique enhancement would be affected by the criminalization of steroids is becoming a reality.

This is very bad news. I live in Oklahoma City and work out at the Weight Room where some of these people train. As a gym rat, I idolize people like Darrell Terrell. He has a pressence that is inspiring (like no other), I have seen him push people to try harder. He gives encouraging compliments and it means a lot coming from someone on that level. I find myself constantly encouraging my male counter-parts to get bigger and such as if its how a man is supposed to look. I think of body builders as heroes, people who set high standards, live strictly healthy lifstyles and work extremely hard. Although this is a confusing mess, I remain a faithful supporter. It is heart breaking to see a person I hold such high esteem for be dragged thru the mud. I will pray for DT and the body building community of OKC.

Quit wasting tax dollars on body builders who choose to use hormones and other substances to improve their appearance. CHILD ABUSERS sex offenders, and thievs should have priority, instead of those taking steroids for personal use. What a waste "idiots"
  • Fuck Oklahoma Period
Well how can you even tell they use juice, especially those feMales. I do not care we have a right to do what we want and Oklahoma is so fucked up they charge people with 90 days for a gram of weed felony time and I hope these 3 take it serious. They are going to jail. That's that. Oklahoma needs to get a life and fall off the upper 50 states. Go to Lawton and get the military why bug people lifting weights.

I hate this common athlete being sniped by police as it is easy but they will not clean out all the juice cops that I see at all the shows....Big bad police bust must of sniffed hard ..If they used dogs then they would of gotten 10000 meth labs armed by peolpe that know the land.. We are target my friends.
I now wear baggy stuff to not draw attention and that is sad.......Sherry is a nice lady..

The Weight Room is a hard core gym where all kinds of people work out.
NO FRILLS AT THIS GYM - JUST LOTS OF EXCELLENT EQUIPMENT
AND A LARGE SPACE. Have worked out there for over 14 years and the people targeted
are hard work out, good hearted and helpful to beginners, and contribute to the community
in many positive ways. None are drug dealers or steroid pushers. There is a serious problem with the skinny/sick looking current gum owner/manager and many people have started to move to other gyms because of his targeted harassment of you if he does not like what is worn to work out or if you are a serious bodybuilder and not a holiday wannabe. This is also an environment very hostile to lesbian women and homosexual men under this manager and he is truly a mental wacko. There are so many problems in OKC with police graft, meth labs, street prostitution in the 25th area, open selling of drugs near the bus station, museum, and downtown library that this is a comedic and sad use of tax payers $$$$ and public service - police misguided and sick with their own guilt. Look at the slovenly and fattttt enormous fattttt of the OKC police and many of the city attorneys and office holders. No pride in their health or appearance. This is a very sick state = governor on down = much like the mess called Illinois.
HAVE MOVED TO ALL AMERICAN GYM LAST MONTH = A SMALLER SPACE, BUT CLEAN
and the bodybuilders on staff are serious competitors and helpful to the workout population.
There is some sentiment that the owner/manager of the Weight Room is part of the problem as he gossips like a girley girl and he is an informer of dishonesty, he is also known to take $$$$$ contributions to grease the path of what he wants and to cover his own.
OK bodybuilders and athletes should be alert and move on to more positive work out venues
and let the local police of OKC do their marginal workouts where they sit on the equipment and gossip about the babes tits and their small meat......WHAT A SICK PLACE AND THE HARM NEW MANAGEMENT CAN BRING TO MANY INNOCENT LIVES.
