Drug Sniffing Dog Makes Steroid Bust at Mexican Border

December 15, 2008 by Millard Baker

A drug sniffing dog was apparently responsible for a steroid bust at the Mexican border in El Paso on December 12, 2008. A United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer stopped a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer at the primary border inspection booth on the Paso del Norte Bridge in El Paso after the driver appeared unusually nervous. A drug sniffing dog named “Shadow” detected steroids carefully concealed inside the dashboard of the Trailblazer during a secondary inspection. Juan Carlos Castillo was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents and held without bond in the El Paso County Jail for attempting to smuggle 150 vials of anabolic steroids into the United States (”Steroids in dashboard and pot in fuel tanks busted by agents,” December 15).

The steroid seizure was made early Friday evening when a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer entered the downtown Paso Del Norte international crossing from Mexico. A CBP officer at the primary inspection booth noticed that the driver was nervous during a routine interview so the vehicle was selected for a secondary exam.  During the secondary inspection, CBP drug sniffing dog “Shadow” alerted to the dashboard of the vehicle. CBP officers continued their exam and discovered bundles of anabolic steroids concealed in the dashboard.  CBP officers removed a total of 150 vials of steroids from the dashboard compartment.

The steroid stash consisted of steroids manufactured in Mexico and sold under the brand names XT Labs and Astrovet Veterinarian Products. Astrovet and XT Labs are two of the many relatively new brands of anabolic steroids originating in Mexico that have replaced the void left by Operation Gear Grinder. Operation Gear Grinder temporarily disrupted the illicit United States steroid trade by shutting down eight Mexican companies that accounted for an estimated 82% of the black market steroid trade. The Operation targeted Quality Vet, Denkall and Animal Power, Laboratorios Tornel, Laboratorios Brovel, Pet’s Pharma, Syd Group and Loeffler.

Astrovet and XT Labs manufacture various steroids products, many of which were seized during the unsuccessful smuggling attempt. The Astrovet injectable steroid line includes Testovet 300 (testosterone blend), Testovet E300 (testosterone enanthate), Decavet 300 (nandrolone decanoate), Equivet 200 (boldenone undecylenate), Trembovet 100 (trenbolone acetate), Methenovet 100 (methenolone enanthate), Stanovet 50 (stanozolol). The XT Labs injectable steroid line includes Stanoplex (stanozolol), Boldeplex (boldenone undecylenate), Testoplex 300 (testosterone cypionate), and Decaplex (nandrolone decanoate).

  • It is amazing what dogs can do. There is nothing better than working a dog while using his nose. From tracking to scent work, it is such a rush!

Clearly this steroid case doesnt make any sense! Alcohol can harm you much more then steroids when abused. Steroids, when taken in proper dosages (depending on the type) can be practically harmless. If an aids patient can be prescribes 250mgs of testosterone cypionate every week, then why cant a bodybuilder take 500mgs a week without having to worry about the law? wont do any harm inless I was dosing 1500mgs+++ a week

Tax payers dollers are being wasted for these steroid laws and procedures. I use anabolics and know probally 1000's of men who also use them, as I work at a fitness facility, and doing ur homework before you poke yourself with needles is the key.

This guy wasn't intending to distribute those vials, HAHAHA it's only 150 vials, that seemed like a stack for his personal use. For intention to sell there would need to be at least 5000 vials, come on lets face it, this guy is mexican and the americans hate them so they decided to put the poor guy through more shit, like most cops do (friggin ego-power trip hot headed men with guns and badges)

besides, if he was a distributor of steroids, then wouldn't he train himself to take the stress of cross border questioning, and not to give himself away? or at least he had done this many times b4.

Steroids for personal use is no harm. If its something someone wishes to do, then so be it. Goodness they give heroin rehab patients drugs so they dont go into shock, DAMN, give more drugs to people who shouldnt use them regardless, but steroids? for something that is meant to cure, help, and support diseases, not to mention grow muscle and strength with slighty larger qauntities. Maybe this is the FDA and government who are making BILLIONS of dollers (overly prescribing pharmecutical products) to patients who dont even need the drugs, so they can TEMORARLY treat their illnesses and continue to sell their ONLY TREATABLE solutions
