Gay Lube Oil Deca Durabolin and Testosterone

When Richard Janeczko, Australian Customs national investigations manager, intercepted 80 kilograms of anabolic steroid powder in Sydney in June 2008, he immediately suspected that Australian Olympic athletes were the intended recipients of these steroids even though absolutely NO link with Australian athletes had been uncovered.

But when Australian Customs intercepted 150 bottle bottles of testosterone and Deca Durabolin disguised as “Gay Lube Oil,” Janeczko was quick to emphasize how unlikely it would be for Australia’s Olympic athletes to use steroids marketed as “Gay Lube Oil” (”Gay lube oil contained banned steroids,” July 30).

“The bulk of the people we investigate are actually not elite sports people. The people that want to enhance their image either gym people, security guards, bikies.”

It is thought that Janeczko believes Australian athletes only use steroids with names like “British Dragon” and “Animal Power” with bulldogs, horses, bulls, dragons (and of course kangaroos) on the labels. Read more

2008 Houston Pro - Ronnie Coleman

Eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman filed a civil lawsuit against Gold’s Gym in Los Angeles Superior Court on July 28, 2008. Coleman is “claiming misappropriation of image and likeness, invasion of privacy and unjust enrichment. ” Gold’s Gym is accused of using a photograph of Ronnie Coleman in an advertising campaign to recruit new gym members without obtaining permission or paying Coleman for the commercial use of his image.

It is good to see pro bodybuilders use the courts to protect against the exploitation of their image. Current Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler filed a similar lawsuit against NDS Nutritional products last year and successfully settled the suit with the company.

TMZ broke the news on their celebrity gossip website. Sadly, TMZ chose to use the regrettable headline, “Mr. Olympia Rages at Gold’s Gym.” The use of the term “rage” in the context of bodybuilding and muscle subtlely and inappropriately suggests “roid rage.” Fortunately, a reader was quick to point out the “ridiculous and misleading” nature of the headline in their comments.

The title of this article is ridiculous and misleading. The title alone perpetuates the stereotypes of steroids. No where in the story is there any mention of rage or anger for that matter. Many of the so-called side effects of steroids have never even been proven but the media continues to use these so-called side effects to keep a bad name associated with body building and other competitive sports… Why not go after Lindsey Lohan or one of the coked out drugged up hookers. They are just as much a role model to kids as Barry Bonds or Ronnie Coleman. But I guess we want the teenage girls of America hooked on hard core drugs and driving drunk and crashing cars. Mean while guys like Bonds have a relatively quiet career, free of crashed cars and DUI’s.

Opelousas High School

I reported on a brewing high school steroid scandal in Louisiana earlier this week on Steroid.com. The St. Landry Sheriff Department made a major steroid bust after targeting three local bodybuilding gyms in Opelousas, Eunice and Krotz Springs during the course of a seven-month investigation. At least one hundred steroid users were identified including several customers who were high school football players.

Some high school coaches are shocked that teenagers on their teams would use steroids; apparently they are not familiar with the efforts of the Taylor Hooton Foundation. Nonetheless, they have overcome their surprise to divert blame to local commercial gyms and the personal trainers who work in those facilities. Read more

Pumped Up on the Internet Steroid Report

LegitScript.com has requested that GoDaddy terminate 155 steroid websites that they have determined are responsible for selling anabolic steroids over the internet to U.S. residents. LegitScript.com sent the termination request via email and via U.S. mail on July 1, 2008. LegitScript.com argues that domain registrars have a legal, social and moral obligation to shutdown the steroid websites they identified because they violate the registrar’s terms of service Read more

Mikal Gunn Schrage aka Maverick, of Nixa, Missouri, pleaded guilty to steroid-related charges in an agreement with federal prosecutors on Friday, July 18, 2008, Mikal Schrage was indicted as part of Operation Raw Deal (and regionally under Operation Juice Box) in 2007 on 26 counts related to possession, conspiracy importation, manufacture and distribution of anabolic steroids as well as money laundering. Gene X Hwang, founder of Orange Photography, just published his review of Steroid Nation by Shaun Assael, about the recent history of the anabolic steroid subculture. The book, in large part, is a biography of steroid guru Dan Duchaine who Assael identifies as one of the “founding fathers of the steroid movement.”  Most people who came in contact with Duchaine have interesting stories to tell. Forty-six year old Boston firefighter Albert Arroyo placed 8th place competing steroid-free at the 2008 WNBF Pro Natural American Championships on May 3, 2008. Normally, this would be an admirable achievement but Boston Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser was not impressed. It seems Arroyo entered the competition only six weeks after seeking full disability retirement because he was “permanently and totally disabled.” Arroyo’s bodybuilding routine was caught on tape. His bodybuilding precontest preparations were made while collecting on his full salary of $68,133 per year tax-free Read more

I\'m Doping Free tattoo

A professional cyclist was caught with a tattoo suggesting he received free anabolic steroids and erythropoietin (EPO) at the 2008 Tour de France. Damiano Cunego rides for the Italian UCI ProTeam Lampre. The tattoo on Cunego’s left arm stated “I’m Doping Free” with a large smiley face.

Does this mean that the Italian-based organization “Doping Free“ donates free steroids and other performance enhancing drugs to sponsored riders?

Obviously not, but BikeRadar.com also found the double meaning humorous Read more

Convicted steroid dealer David Jacobs killed IFBB pro figure competitor Amanda Savell in a murder-suicide; the scenario was likely fueled by jealousy over her relationship with NFL football player Matt Lehr according to the Dallas Morning News. Matt Lehr admitted deep feelings in his relationship with Savell (”Jealousy may have led steroids dealer David Jacobs to kill ex-girlfriend and himself,” July 13).

“She was in love with me, and I loved her,” Mr. Lehr, 29, said in a recent interview, acknowledging for the first time his relationship with Amanda Earhart-Savell, a 30-year-old professional figure competitor and fitness magazine cover girl who also had dated Mr. Jacobs on and off since last year.

We extend our sincerest sympathies and condolences to Matt Lehr and her family and friends for their loss.

2010 Cologne Gay Games poster

The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) announced that the 2010 Cologne Gay Games VIII will implement testing for anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs in all sporting events. The testing at the 2010 Cologne Gay Games will be based on the stingent World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) doping protocols. The 2006 Chicago Gay Games introduced drug testing to athletes in powerlifting, bodybuilding and wrestling for the first time.

Steroid testing at the Gay Games highlights the problem of therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) that allow the use of banned substances for legitimate medical indications; anabolic-androgenic steroids are routinely used in HIV patients. The WADA protocols allow for TUEs but do not address the acceptability of exemptions for the use of anabolic steroids for HIV. The Federation of Gay Games hopes to redefine and improve the WADA protocols by encouraging “mainstream sports become not just more accepting of gay athletes, but more accommodating of athletes with chronic medical concerns - especially HIV Read more

Smart Money Magazine (July 2008) with not-so-smart article about DSHEA and anabolic steroids

Columnist Peter Keating reveals his ignorance of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in the July 2008 issue Smart Money Magazine which is also reprinted in the Wall Street Journal. He suggests that the “utterly crazy law” DSHEA created an unregulated market permitting physicians at anti-aging clinics to prescribe anabolic steroids, testosterone, and human growth hormone [HGH] (”Antiaging Clinics Are Gaining in Popularity,” July 9).
