Bodybuilding Cosmetic Surgeon Bruce Nadler Dead in Murder-Suicide

February 8, 2008 by Millard Baker

The Los Angeles Police Department discovered former bodybuilding cosmetic surgeon Bruce Nadler, MD and his wife dead as the result of gunshot wounds on Monday, February 4, 2008. Authorities believe it is an apparent murder-suicide perpetrated by Bruce Nadler.

Bruce Nadler called himself the “world’s strongest plastic surgeon.” He was probably the best known cosmetic surgeon catering to amateur and professional bodybuilders. He had performed over 700 gynecomastia surgeries in his career; “gyno” is a side effect of anabolic steroid use when antiaromatase and/or estrogen antagonists are not use concurrently.

After retiring from the practice of medicine in August 2005, Dr. Nadler, who called himself “the world’s strongest plastic surgeon,” wrote the “The Nip Tuck Workout: Exercise through the Eyes of a Plastic Surgeon” and subsequently moved with his wife to Los Angeles to reinvent himself in a new career as personal trainer with the opening of Nip Tuck Fitness LA in Beverly Hills.

Retired plastic surgeon and certified personal trainer Bruce J. Nadler M.D. has brought his Plastic Synergy training system to Los Angeles. As stated in his book, “The Nip Tuck Workout – Exercise through the Eyes of a Plastic Surgeon,” Dr. Nadler has created an exercise program based on the plastic surgical principles of proportion and symmetry. It combines careful analysis with an individualized exercise prescription.

Bruce Nadler, MD retired after the New York State Board of Professional Medical Conduct charged him with 29 specifications of professional misconduct in thirteen patients according to public records. Rather than fight the charges, Nadler submitted and consent agreement and voluntarily relinquished his medical license.

The specifications of professional misconduct were primarily related to prescribing a variety of anabolic steroids, growth hormone and ancillary medications used by bodybuilders including Saizen, Serostim, Genotropin, Androgel, Depo Testosterone, Delatestryl, Deca Durabolin, testosterone cypionate, testosterone enanthate, Nolvadex, Proscar, Clomid, tamoxifen, Arimidex, Finasteride and Viagra. In each case, he was accused of the following:

  • Failure to obtain and/or note an adequate and complete medical history and/or history of current complaint from patient.

  • Failure to perform and/or note a complete and appropriate physical examination of patient.

  • Failure to obtain and/or note appropriate and medically indicated laboratory studies on patient including: prolactin, TSH, LH, hepatic and renal function, and assays for estrogen levels and HCG.

  • Failure to properly diagnose patient’s condition and/or rule out underlying disorders.

  • Inappropriately and without medical idnication and/or justification, prescribing and/or maintaining patient on various medications.

  • Failure to maintain a medical record for patient in accordance with accepted medical standards which accurately reflects his care and treatment of the patient.

Bruce Nadler’s beliefs regarding anabolic steroids and bodybuilding were controversial for physician. He explained his own steroid use and his willingness to prescribe steroids and growth hormone to his patients in an interview with Testosterone Nation:

I’m my own test laboratory in that respect because, in the last two years, I’ve been taking 6 to 8 IUs a week of growth hormone, and I alternate between 200 mg a week of deca and 200 mg of testosterone cypionate the next week. Instead of going super physiological, I believe in just going to maximum natural levels to that of a man in his twenties. In this way, there are no side effects.

Nadler was also critical of the steroid hysteria in the U.S. and the political posturing surrounding anabolic steroids:

I’ve always felt that politicians always have to make the majority of the electorate think that they’re doing something? So they inconvenience a small, unimportant group, like bodybuilders. They have no idea what they’re talking about. Somebody hands them a speech, and they go! They took something that could have been done safely and sent it to the black market and all of the inherent dangers that go along with dealing with that element. Will they ever be legal again? I hope so.

I KNEW DR. NADLER AND TERRI WHEN THEY WERE IN SMITHTOWN. I REFERRED ALOT OF FRIENDS TO HIM. THIS IS JUST VERY SAD, ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE THE CHRIS BENOIT STORY, AND IF THE STEROIDS WERE BEHIND THIS, THIS IS A GOOD TIME TO MAKE IT PUBLIC WITH ALL THIS GOING ON WITH BASEBALL AND ALL. I DON'T THINK THE DOCTOR ACTUALLY BELIEVED IN THE DANGER HERE. HE LOVED HIS WORK-- AND HE LOVED TERRI.

I was one of the three women who went on The View after Dr. Nadler performed liposuction on me. One had a chest augmentation and the other had a tummy tuck. I remember it well. Oct 18, 2001. He and his wife were very friendly when we were in the dressing room waiting to be called. However I also remember a time when I got a 2nd surgery on my abs because I had terrible scarring, and his wife was helping me get out of my post-op garment and ripped the zippers off so fast saying "oh relax, it's nothing" as I screamed in pain... she seemed to me to be the Mata Hari of the couple. But Nadler was the quintessential ego-ist who adored the human form, among them his own, and probably got too carried away with his desires for perfection. It's a sad story and I pray for both their souls. One thing I can say is that on The View, Joyce Beyhar and Star Jones interviewed me and chided me for getting lipo. Now that Joyce is still there, and fighting the urge to purge, and Star Jones has lost a ton of weight after stapling her belly... what goes around comes around. Never judge a person for wanting to do what they want to do in their life. IT'S JUST PLAIN WRONG. Anyway, God Bless Dr. Nadler and his wife. May they both rest in peace.

This is a shocking ,sad situation. I trained with Dr. Nadler at Bev Francis gym in Syosset, and could not recall a more compassionate ,educated trainer. He did not display an ego at all and we had many conversations on the finer things in life. God rest their soul.

I just found out through a friend, what happened i am in shock and disbelief i actually told my friend to find a picture because there could be a few Bruce Nadler's and when she pulled the photo i was realy sadened to see it was the same man that i had asked to hold my hand while i was being prepared for my breast augementation. This was in Smithtown,Long Isalnd New York.I was terrified of going under but excited at what the results were going to be . As he held my hand he said to me dont be afraid everything will be fine just dont blame me when your spending alot in bras at Victoria's Secret .He was very kind to me and a professional i felt very comfortable with him and i felt sure of myslef that i made the right decision .After surgery as a thank you i sent him a red ceramic apple with a brass stem on top and had it engraved Worlds Greatest Plastic Surgeon Dr. B. Nadler . I must say i dont have any regrets and in my mind i'll never forget his kind words .He helped me feel good about myself and gave me confidence and i felt beautiful.I am realy sad about what happened and dont understand it. God bless him and his wife may they both rest in peace .He will always be remembered never forgotten in my mind and in my heart.

I had the best abdominal liposuction done by Dr. Nadler. It had changed my life in so many ways. Ten years later, I decided to repeat the procedure. I would have loved for Dr. Nadler to treat me but he moved to LA. Subsequently, I had the procedure done by a Park Ave Plastic Surgeon (New York Magazine's acclaimed Best Doctors). I was less than pleased by the results, mostly because it could not compare to Dr. Nadler's work. Terri was always so nice to me when I visited. I am shocked and deeply saddened that 2 people that had a sincere passion to help people are no longer around...a deep loss for everyone.........

Yes ..is a shock! You live by the swored ..you die by the sworded.. Just found out last week from someone i ran into that had work done by Bruce. I had work done by Bruce myself & never was happy with the results. Bruce redid the work and knew he mess up . Still to the day i have alot of problems & still carry the scares & pain ..here it is 9 years later. What a big mistake. I did have it out with him about the work he performed. Poor Terri ...she was always so sweet & nice to me. Bruce did tell in his office in Smithtown..this is b4 we had our misunderstanding about the second surgrey. That he would go into bodbuilding in his age group.& he would be writing a book.I do forgive him..because i have a heart after God & God forgave us for our sinnerful ways. My heart felt smypathy to his family as well asTerri family & friend. No man die to himself & if we die we die unto God ..And if we live we live unto God..weather we live or die we belong to God. r.i.p. Terri & Bruce...
